Classes Pilates

Pilates

Pilates—pronounced "puh-LAH-teez"—is a method of exercise developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century in Europe. Intrinsically curious, Joseph's own physical challenges as a young man led to a lifelong exploration of the body and methods of self healing.

With limited resources and space, Pilates was able to craft a series of fundamental exercises that increased energy, circulation, and mobility. His work developed further when presented with the opportunity to test the new method with internment camp members and wounded soldiers of WW1. Pilates began creating equipment using bed springs to rehabilitate bedridden "patients." A series of original matwork developed into over 500 exercises and physical movement.

Pilates focuses on:

  • increasing lung capacity and circulation through deep breathing
  • increasing strength and improving bone density and joint health
  • balancing strength and flexibility of the entire body—particularly of the abdomen and back muscles; and
  • coordination, both muscular and mental.

When practiced with regularity and dedication, one will experience an increase in posture, balance, core strength, and physical awareness.

Mat Classes are limited to 6 students. Equipment classes are limited to 3 students. Our price point is slightly higher than other studios due to the small class sizes. We maintain the integrity of the work by focusing on smaller groups, so that each student gets the most out of their hour with their teacher.

Beginning Pilates Mat

This class is for the beginner and the advanced student, offering people a space to work on basic Pilates principles and techniques, such as finding neutral spine, working true thoracic rotation and stability of the pelvis. Although there is attention to technique and detail, the class remains smooth and flowing and will give you a good workout.

Beginning/Intermediate Pilates Mat

This class builds on the Pilates repertoire, by introducing more endurance and more challenging exercises. We will learn and build our strength as we explore spinal articulation, upper and lower extremity alignment, hip disassociation and movement integration. This class is good for people who have explored Pilates before and would like to begin more challenging sequences in a safe environment.

Intermediate and Intermediate/Advanced Pilates Mat

Pilates mat exercises strengthen you by using the resistance of your body and gravity. Exercise balls, bands, foam rollers and other props are sometimes incorporated. This is a full body workout that will leave you stretched, strengthened and invigorated! This class is for the devoted Pilates student who has practiced and embodied the fundamental and beginning levels and is ready to increase their range of motion and strength by delving into the intermediate and advanced levels. You must have a strong and regular Pilates practice to join this group.

Intermediate/Advanced Pilates Equipment

Increase your strength, stamina, and range of motion in our intermediate and advanced equipment class. We will build upon our clients strength and understanding of Pilates apparatus using the trap table, cadillac, reformer, chair, ped-o pull, and barrels . Students must have had private lessons before enrolling in this class.

Prenatal Mat

Prenatal Mat class uses physio balls, magic circles, thera bands and rollers to compliment the Pilates Metod and bring each mother-to-be strength, flexibility and relaxation. Slow paced, focuses on the breath and strengthening the pelvic floor, along with upper body strength for the work to come after pregnancy and lower body strength for toning and flexibility.

Pilates for Dancers

This class is for dancers, ice skaters or gymnasts and focuses on alignment, efficiency of movement, and finding one's range of motion from a safe and stable place. By using principles of Pilates such as breath, spinal articulation, and alignment, we explore how we initiate movements and how we hold those positions for a longer period of time and then flow out of them. Attention is given to opposing muscles groups as well.  For example, since dancers use external rotation of the hip joints frequently, time is spent exploring internal rotation as well, allowing for more muscular balance and recuperation.

Pilates for Skiiers

This class focuses on core stability, balance, alignment of the upper and lower extremities, endurance and coordination. During this 90-minute class we will use a combination of equipment, props and mat work. This class is geared to all levels of skiers and may enhance recovery time along with performance while decreasing chance of injury.
